Googly-Eyed for Jesus: A Love That Doesn’t Hold Back

Every Friday, I have the incredible privilege of serving on the prayer team at a local event called Friday Night Prayer and Worship. It’s truly one of the highlights of my week. Before worship begins, our team gathers to pray—and the other night, something really beautiful happened.

As we were praying, someone mentioned that we should ask God to give us a “googly-eyed relationship” with Jesus. Sounds funny at first, right? But the more I thought about it, the more it resonated with me. We were asking for a love so deep and consuming for Jesus that we wouldn’t care how we looked expressing it—just like when someone’s head-over-heels in love and totally unbothered by what anyone thinks.

Isn’t that what true love looks like? In our culture, when someone is passionately in love with a person, a team, or even a hobby, they often act a little wild, a little over-the-top—and they don’t care who’s watching. That’s the kind of love I want to carry for Jesus—not just during worship on Fridays, but in the everyday, ordinary moments of life.

As we prayed, my mind immediately went to John 12:3

Mary showed deep devotion to Jesus by anointing His feet with a pound of very costly spikenard oil during a meal—an unusual and humble act. She wiped His feet with her hair, an expression of great humility, extravagance, and unselfconscious love. This perfume, extremely valuable (worth a year’s wages), was considered only worthy for His feet. Her act also broke social norms, as Jewish women rarely let down their hair in public.

This event reflects Mary’s profound spiritual connection to Jesus, seen in three moments:

  • learning at His feet (Luke 10:39),
  • surrendering at His feet (John 11:32),
  • honoring His feet (John 12:3). Her act filled the house with fragrance, symbolizing the lasting impact of true devotion.

If I’m honest, I often see myself more like Martha—always busy, always serving. And while there’s beauty in that, I’m learning the value of being like Mary too. I’m learning to slow down, to sit at Jesus’ feet and simply listen. To rest. To let Him refresh my weary spirit.

More than anything, I want my life to be marked by surrender at His feet and honor poured out in love. A love that’s bold, unrestrained, and maybe even a little wild. Because He’s worth it—all of it.
