So many of us know this story very well – we see a woman accused of adultery, brought to Jesus, Jesus writes in the sand, tells her accusers “the one without sin, throw the first stone”, the accusers leave, He asks the woman where are her accusers? She is no longer condemned – go and sin no more.
But let’s go deeper –
First the accusers bring the woman to Jesus to test him, it was a setup to see how Jesus would react. In order for adultery to be committed it took TWO people to commit. The man was never brought to Jesus for judgement. They wanted to test Jesus, if He said, “Let her go”, then He would be breaking the Law of Moses. If He told them to execute her for the crime of adultery, then Jesus would’ve appeared to be “harsh” and perhaps “cruel” … We see a similar dilemma as posed by the question to Jesus about paying taxes to Caesar (Matthew 22:15-22).
Next, Jesus stoops and starts writing on the ground with His finger – what He wrote? I am unsure – there’s many theories out there. What I do know is that He didn’t answer her accusers right away… as if He never heard them. When we accept Jesus as our savior, our accusers’ voices are ignored (Jesus doesn’t listen to them).

I really want to draw your attention here, if you don’t get anything else out of what I write – please let this sink in. Jesus stooped. Stooping is an act of humility, a low posture. He stooped. I feel like in this moment He was identifying with the humiliation of this woman. How can God show love and grace to the sinner without being unjust? He does it first by identifying with the sinner in their low condition (When God spoke this to me, it humbled me and broke me). We see the gentleness and meekness of Jesus that Paul talks about in 2 Corinthians 10:1![]()

Next, Jesus stands back up and says to the accusers “The one who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone”. Then he stooped down again to continue drawing in the sand. WOW! He didn’t stand there with His arms crossed, tapping His foot, waiting for their response. His response gave their hearts a chance to respond. As we read, they leave one by one beginning with the oldest to the youngest… Their conscience was not dead or burned over.
After Jesus asked where her accusers are, He tells her He doesn’t condemn her. Jesus took her guilt upon Himself, especially as He so demonstrably stooped down. He alone was without sin among them. Knowing all things, He had the right to cast the first stone.
The religious leaders knew the thrill of exercising the power to condemn; but Jesus KNEW the thrill of exercising the power to forgive. (Romans 8:1)
Whatever your situation is, He can forgive you.
Finally, “Go and sin no more”… He sent her away with a call to stop her sin. He recognized her sin, told her to stop sinning, gave her HOPE that life could go on in freedom from sexual sin and gave her a word of hope to speak against the shame (neither I condemn you).
Guys! This is the God we serve, one who loves us and wants to set us free ![]()
